The Amazing Underwater Forest of Lake Kaindy

What makes Lake Kaindy truly remarkable is that it contains an underwater forest. Visible on the lakes surface are the tall, dried-out tops of submerged Spruce trees that rise above the water’s surface like the masts of sunken ships. They are the only sign of the amazing frozen forest below the water’s surface.

The water is so cold (even in summer the temperature does not exceed 6 degrees) that the pine needles remain on the trees, even after a hundred years of being submerged. During the winter, the lake freezes and becomes a popular spot for ice diving.

The lake is 400 meters long and is located in Kazakhstan’s portion of the Tian Shan Mountains, about 129 km from the city of Almaty. The lake was created after an earthquake in 1911 triggered a large landslide blocking the gorge and forming a natural dam.

and then the English title is “Sinking of you”

so when you think of another person, that mentally woven image will float up to the surface beyond your reach

When the rain comes after a long dry spell, it’s like colors seeping back into the world. Your nose used to be guarded against the harsh dryness in the air, but suddenly there’s moisture, and it pops your smell open; it’s like how your pupils suddenly dilate when you see something pleasing. Things become rounder, sharper too. You remember why you have a nose.

The first rain smells of wet earth. It’s almost like there’s dirt pushed up your nose. It’s a robust smell, rich like coffee. And there’s the smell of life, too; it’s a complex, organic smell, the smell equivalent of pushing your hand in black soil, and feeling the roots there, the life crawling, the potential for growth. It smells wet, just like your skin feels wet just before the rain.

When the rains come after a long, dry period, it’s like the whole of life comes alive again, and they party in your nostrils to celebrate.”
